Melomakarona recipe

M E L O M A M A R O NA are traditional Greek Christmas cookies that are served during Christmas time throughout Greece. They are made with the most aromatic honey, orange zest, cinnamon and gloves and once they are in the oven, the entire house smells delightfully Christamassy!

Here’s the recipe I followed, it makes 50 pieces, eaten appropriately within three days 🙂


2 cups sunflower oil
3/4 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup liquer
1/2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice
1. 5 teaspoons baking soda diluted in the orange juice
1. 5 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoons grounded cloves
1 orange zest
7-8 cups flour

Mix all the ingredients in a big bowl with your hands. Shape small bite size balls, place on a tray and bake at 175 degrees for 30′. Set aside to cool.

For the syrup:
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups water
2 cups honey
Combine all in a pot and boil until you get a syrup consistency. Dip the cold cookies in the hot syrup one by one and let them soak for 1′ each. Serve with honey and walnuts on top.
