The Friday Edit

The Friday Edit

Happy Friday friends and welcome to another instalment of The Friday Edit blog Series! This week has flown by so quickly I sincerely cannot believe it’s Friday already. On Monday, I sat down to work and didn’t lift my head until my stomach started rumbling, only to realise it was 3pm. The next days went by equally quickly with admin work, photoshootings and meetings and so here I am today writing The Friday Edit once again! Without further ado, here’s what happened this week:

ONE// In preparation of an autumn picnic photoshooting I am organising with Jules and Kendall for the upcoming weekend, I had a few brands sending me products to feature them on the day. On Wednesday, Mr. Postman rang the bell and delivered five bags from NEXT filled with autumnal clothes and just yesterday he brought me a pair of fur lined boots from EMU Australia and I so look forward to wearing them all during the photoshooting and the rest of autumn.

TWO// It’s no secret that Instagram numbers have fallen drastically the past year for everyone and that Instagram growth is extremely slow these days. Blame it on the change of the algorithm or, in my case, on my camera breaking and having to take pictures with my macro lens – that are producing images completely different to what I used to post- but reality is, Instagram is dying. On Wednesday morning, and just before Mr. Postman knocked my door, I decided to watch TV and posted my breakfast tray on my Instagram account and it went viral like the good old days! I seriously could not believe it, I kept getting notifications and private messages and kept wondering if this is what people want to see more on Instagram these days. When the majority of collaborators, sadly, judge bloggers today based on their Instagram numbers, I hope you can see why I was so happy! I know it is very shallow to be happy for the number of your Instagram likes, but as Natbee’s is my full-time job, this pretty much equals a mini recognition in the work environment, right?

THREE// One thing that really hit me hard this week is the lack of appreciation for the services bloggers provide. I choose to feature only places and products that are close to my heart here at Natbee’s and I do not mind reviewing places and products without receiving any payment if I like them and are things that I would pay for myself. HOWEVER, I get truly disappointed when people take advantage of my time and ask for things for free on top of services that I have already provided to them for free and without asking them anything in return. To make a long story short, I was contacted by an independent, local cafe the other day asking if they could use my images of their place in their new website. They offered nothing in return, no payment, no credits would be given and to be honest they didn’t even thank me at first place for all the exposure I have provided to them so far. Not a single ‘thank you‘ as a form of appreciation for my time and services! I understand that the majority of people who are not familiar with the digital marketing word think that bloggers do literally nothing and, thus, are not worth any sort of payment. But, to ask for my images use and rights for commercial purpose, that let’s face it, will make your website look more professional without considering that it costs me to buy and maintain my expensive camera kit just shows lack of respect and unprofessionalism! There is a tremendous amount of time that goes into blogging and social media and there is a certain cost that we pay to cover our blog expenses from domains to camera kits and anything else that might come up, much as you pay for your rent, chef and other expenses. It is truly a shame when people treat bloggers like they are hobbyists, so please respect us and our services before approaching us with a cheeky offer! Moving on…

FOUR/ Autumn leaves, they are everywhere and they make Aberdeen so beautiful! I never really appreciated autumn until I moved in Scotland and I can safely say that it is the most beautiful season in this country. Everyday I cannot wait to take Cruz on a walk through the park and just look at the trees and the change of colours, so pretty!

And with all that said and done, let’s step into another weekend. I was supposed to travel to Dunkeld House Hotel this weekend but with the weather misbehaving I am staying in Aberdeen watching movies and drinking hot chocolate (not that it doesn’t make me happy!).

What are your plans for this weekend?

Goodness gracious me, that’s pathetic! How a business would have this attitude is beyond me and especially after you have spread the word multiple times for them. Perhaps they have never heard the saying ‘good manners will take you far’?
I am looking forward to your photoshooting pictures, sounds like so much fun!!!

      Hi Annelise,

Unfortunately not everyone understands the idea of digital marketing! I bet the majority of people who are not bloggers or have never heard of blogging and the the entrepreneurial side of it, think that we are just people who have loads of free time on our hands and go around taking pictures!

Thank you for your comment. x

    Happy Friday!
I’m happy that you had a good Instagram post! It’s honestly so exhausting to keep up with all things Instagram related. It’s hard to know what people want to see, what Instagram is showing people and keeping true to what you want to post.
I’m really sorry you had that experience with that cafe! It shows that manners are just lacking these days. A thank you and a photo credit costs nothing!

Thanks Kristen. Not only the never thanked me but they thought I was mean refusing to provide them with my images rights of use! I am talking about an absolute lack of manners and basic knowledge!

I agree, this week flew by so quickly! I can’t believe it’s Friday either.
How horrible of that local cafe to be like that towards you. Not even a thank you? Rude!

Thank you Kelsey. Sadly not even a single thank you! I am not expecting anything from anyone, especially if I like your place and it is my choice to feature you on my website, however if you are being cheeky asking for more than you are entitled to, then I think there is a big lack of basic human sense!

When you’re busy with the grind, time flies! Pretty cool that you have an autumn picnic photoshoot! Glad to hear that’s going well. I hate how Instagram is making it difficult for people to promote their content. Success is definitely not determined by the number of likes. Heck, people can buy them and give a false perception.

It’s not cool when businesses, who actually make money try to rip bloggers off. For commercial use, it’s fair to give some sort of compensation.

Thank you Nancy! I am looking forward to that autumn photoshooting, should be so much fun!
I totally agree about Instagram, the number of likes is not an indicator of success and I personally am more happy with the engagement here on the blog than anywhere else 🙂

You are right, but on this occasion it wasn’t only a matter of being ‘ripped off’, but mostly being disrespected and having to deal with people lacking basic human sense. A ‘thank you’ can take you further away than anything else! x

So sorry you had this bad experience with that cafe. But I see you can trust on other partners and received cool items for the autumn shooting!

Thank you Rena! Oh trust me, nothing is being send or gifted ‘for free’. The brands who approached me to collaborate with me for this photoshooting knew very well that they will get exposure 😉 so to them it was the perfect opportunity!

Hey, congrats on that viral picture! So cool that people want to see that cozy, “unfiltered” side of life, even though the picture was absolutely beautiful 🙂

Thank you! I was just utterly surprised how an raw image got more impressions than a curated one. Perhaps, that’s what people want to see? Life as it is and not as we imagine it?x

Aaargh, I absolutely hate it when people underestimate our work and if I were you I’d have already deleted all the free work you have done for them.

Thank you Joanne. No, I am not going to delete any of my review posts. They have a nice business and people deserve to know about it. It’s just a shame that they had this attitude. I am sure one day they will realise their mistake 🙂 x

Preaching your words about people working with bloggers for free.
I also don’t like it when people patronise me and ask me to take pictures for them to ‘put them in my portfolio’. I don’t need you to tell me what to do or what to include in my portfolio, thank you, I have my own ideas and content. There is nothing worse than devaluing someone’s work by offering lower prices, or in your case, nothing at all. How very rude of them!

Thank you Jessica. That’s another kind of case where people try to devalue your work and make you provide services for free. You know, somedays I just wish the blogging profession was more widespread so that people knew things before approaching you rather than wasting you precious time with insults and questions. One day!
