My first attempt at changing the name of my Blog and Social Media channels was back in 2015; I no longer felt that Natbeesfashion as a brand represented me since I didn’t post my daily outfits anymore, something I used to do a lot more at the very beginning of this little internet corner of mine! Natbeesfashion felt outdated so my next thought was to turn it into Natbees, which makes perfect sense considering that Natbeesfashion had that part in it and it would be easily searchable on Google.
I spent an evening, searching for other potential brand names and to my disappointment, Natbees on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter was already taken, but not bought as a domain! That was the moment, I realised I COULD have Natbees as my brand’s name, but my social media channels had to remain as Natbeesfashion, since everything else was taken. If you work in Marketing or you are a blogger yourself, then I am sure you realise the annoyance of it! Imagine people who want to work with you and search for your blog but cannot find your social media channels because they are under a different name!
To make a long story short, I decided to let things as they are, and got in touch with the accounts that hold the Natbees username offering them to buy it. I received no responses so far, which makes it even more irritating as it proves that these accounts are not being used anymore and there is nothing I can do to claim the username..
Earlier this week, I had a discussion with a blogger friend and we both concluded that my brand has to keep the Natbees part in it, as this is how people find me on Google searches and what comes up if you type things like ‘Aberdeen blogger‘. Additionally, if I was to change the whole brand’s name, it would take me ages to rename everything again, from buying a new domain to changing all my social media channels and descriptions. So, this morning I decided it was time for a change and I changed Natbeesfashion to Natbeestravels on all my social media channels for the main reason that travelling is what this blog is about for the past 5 years and I do not see it changing anytime soon!
I post about it on all my social media and also sent a few e-mails to PR friends to let them know about the change, so they won’t think that my old links are not working anymore and that I have disappeared from the internet! I know it will take me ages to introduce myself as Natbeestravels from now and onward, as it is a matter of habit to have Natbeesfashion slipping out of my mouth all these past years.
But I have changed everything now – including the ‘Let’s connect’ YouTube descriptions under each of my videos, where I link my social media channel links – and even though I am still hoping that one day I will be able to buy the username Natbees, for the time being I got some peace of mind knowing that I am a step closer to where I want to take my brand in the future.
What do you think of this username change? Have you ever had to change your username/blog domain?
