Travelling // A cruise to the Arctic with G’s Expedition

Have you ever wondered how it is to be on a cruise ship to the Arctic?

When I think of a cruise my mind goes to summer holidays around the Mediterranean, so receiving an invitation from the Expedition Cruises-G Adventures to experience how life is on a cruise ship that takes you to the Arctic and Antarctic was an unexpected yet pleasant surprise 🙂 The ship was docked for “re-positioning” in Leith port in Edinburgh, were essential maintenance was undertaken and provided a great opportunity for people to be on board and learn about the travel destinations it offers.

We were welcomed with a glass of champagne and some nibbles before taking a tour around the decks. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I have never been on a cruise so I was curious to see what the boat offers to the travelers.

Our tour guide was Sarah, one of the Expedition Leaders and I have to say that seeing the crew being so enthusiastic about the boat made me even more eager to learn about this experience. Sarah, along with the rest of the Leaders and crew spend most of their time on board and to say that they love their job is a huge understatement; they are as enthusiastic as a child eating candies! The tour started in the library- a place to study, check on your emails and work while being far away from the noisy city. On this note, I would like to mention that there is wifi provided all over the ship and decks via satellite connection so being online/Skyping etc. is not a problem while traveling, pretty amazing for the north pole!

The luxury suite was fabulous; there was an open space living room with a desk and big windows and then the bedroom was separated with a fine wall. What caught my attention the most though was the bathroom, it was bigger than mine back home!

There are many different rooms available in this boat, depending on the price you are willing to pay and the deck floor you would like to be located. However, ever the cheapest rooms were still very impressive; nicely designed and spacious, perfect to relax after a zodiac landing.

A typical day in the boat is as follows:
>> 7.00 am wakeup call
>> 7.30 am breakfast
>> 8.30 am. First zodiac landing
>> 12.00 pm lunch
>> 2.00 am. Second zodiac landing or cruise (depends on the weather)
>> 6.00 am. Recap, briefing & presentations
>> 7.30 pm dinner
>> 9.30 pm documentary

Of course if you prefer not to follow on a landing because you think you will not be able to make it you are free to do things on your own like go to the gym, relax in the sauna or meet the captain in the control room maybe?

I am pretty sure Steven would do with a few hours in this gym if he could…

Despite being on a boat, the state of the art facilities can guarantee you a very pleasant journey. The sauna is a great place to relax after being exposed to the cold conditions during a landing and the huge mud room is the place where you can leave your wet/dirty clothes to dry (so no need to carry them in your room). Plus, if you are brave enough there are canoes provided to give you a really intimate experience with the water. G’s Expedition Arctic cruise

To say that the food on board is delicious is an understatement, we felt like being in a luxurious hotel! The dining room is nicely designed so that you can have a sea view while enjoying some of the scrumptious dishes (salmon for me, beef for the boyfriend).

After lunch we headed for a last tour around the top deck, where it was pretty windy as you can see, hi Steven!

I would certainly recommend you open your mind to a totally different kind of cruise than anyone you know will have done and go on a trip to the Arctic or Antarctic at least once in your life.
Not up for it? How about Galapagos or South America then?
